So...what exactly is therapy?
Great question! Put simply, "therapy" (also known as "counseling") is a collaborative journey in which you and a trained professional explore your goals, desires, and reasons for change and growth. The American Counseling Association (ACA) defined counseling as "a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals."
When you first meet with a therapist, you will have what is called an "intake" session. You will fill out a helpful questionnaire in preparation for your appointment, and you and your therapist will review your answers with you to reach a better understanding of what you want to learn and achieve from counseling. You will also hear a bit more about your therapist and their preferred approach (such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or solution-focused therapy).
The intake may feel like personal questions are being asked at times, but therapy IS personal. If you aren't ready to discuss certain experiences or concerns, that's okay as well! You are the captain of your ship, and your therapist will pace your sessions according to your lead. As you become more comfortable with therapy and your therapist, you will open up about your challenges and become proud of your evolution!
In addition to individual therapy, folks also find group therapy to be very helpful with addressing behavioral patterns, unhelpful thoughts, and obtaining support. In a therapy group, one or two trained therapists serve as group facilitators, helping to guide the conversation, process, and experiences of various group members as they share their goals and areas for improvement with one another. What happens in the group room, remains in the group room, and as the group improves on a macro level, each member changes for the better on the individual level.
